A notebook for looking closely
Texture at a human scale
Stone, bark and worn paint are easiest to read when their scale is clear. Include a familiar edge or joint in the frame.
Look for repetition
A repeating pattern gives the eye a rhythm. One irregular mark can then become the subject without needing a dramatic composition.
Leave some space
An image filled with texture can be difficult to understand. A quieter area beside the detail makes the surface easier to read.
