A notebook for looking closely
Reading morning light
Low light makes a small change in height visible. Look for the edge of a shadow before looking at its colour.
A useful starting point
Choose one object and observe it from both the lit side and the shaded side. The difference is often more informative than a change of camera settings.
A quiet exercise
Return to the same spot at another time. Keep the viewpoint fixed and compare the direction, length and softness of the shadows.
